In May 2023 the Moroccan Ministry of Education announced a transition to English as the primary foreign language in all of Morocco's educational institutions. It was a decision that received overwhelming support from Moroccans.

The Marrakech English Book Festival came about as a result of this growing interest in English amongst young Moroccans and their desire to see more cultural events in the English language.

British Council logo

British Council

The ongoing support and enthusiasm of the British Council and the British Embassy are key foundations on which the festival was conceived and brought to life. As the speaking and writing of English has gained in popularity, the British mission to Morocco has been there to promote and support cultural exchange and understanding between, not just the two countries, but to partner with Morocco as it opens itself to the wider English speaking world.

The 2025 and 2027 editions of the Marrakech English Book Festival are only possible because of the generous support of the British Council and Country Director, Alexandra Balafrej.

Committee for the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) logo

Committee for the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME)

Many of Morocco's most important authors, writing in English, are part of the Moroccan diaspora. Moroccan literary talent is recognized on the world stage. Part of the mission of the Marrakech English Book Festival is to showcase these writers alongside their non Moroccan contemporaries.

In this endeavour, the Committee for the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) is a vital partner. The CCME, which supports the festival through the provision of international air tickets, is a key partner for the festival. Without the committee's support, we would not be able to host so many internationally renowned Moroccan authors from around the world.

The International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF)

For the 2027 Edition of the MEBF we are delighted to partner with the IPAF as it celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

It is the most prestigious literary prize in the Arab world. Every year, the prize winner is the novel deemed the best by a diverse panel of judges, who are prominent literary and cultural figures with a demonstrable interest and engagement in Arabic literature.

Dar Bellarj Foundation logo

Dar Bellarj Foundation

Dar Bellarj Foundation is our long term partner in the Medina for our program of children and young adult events. Founded by Susanna Bidermann, Dar Bellarj is both a community and cultural centre serving the people of the Medina. Under the direction of Maha El Madi, the centre provides educational opportunities for both adults and children and hosts artistic and cultural events.

Marrakech Riads logo

Marrakech Riads

Marrakech Riads is our major venue partner. Marrakech Riads was created by Abdellatif Ben Abdellah, one of the key actors behind today's appreciation of the unique architectural and cultural heritage of the Medina of Marrakech. His cultural and arts centre, Dar Cherifa was one of our venues in the very first edition of the festival and the newly created Riad El Pacha will be our main venue in 2027. We are immensely appreciative of the support that Marrakech Riads, and Abdellatif, have provided the festival from our very earliest days.

Educational Partners

Université Cadi Ayyad Marrakech logoUniversity Mohammed VI Polytechnic logo

Université Cadi Ayyad & UM6P

The Marrakech Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) and the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Benguerir are key institutional partners. University students are a core audience of our festival. Not only can students register for free festival passes, but as a core part of our activities, we organize on campus author events so that the festival can reach a wider student audience.

At Cadi Ayyad we organize events with the university's English department and the Faculty of Arabic Language.

Our collaboration with UM6P is primarily with the university's language Lab.

Visual Arts School of Marrakech (ESAV) logo

Visual Arts School of Marrakech (ESAV)

The Visual Arts School (ESAV) of Marrakech has been a partner of the festival since the beginning. In the first edition of the festival a team from the cinema department were the official photographers of the event. As the festival has evolved to also champion the publication of children's books, we have collaborated with the ESAV graphic arts department to hold illustration master classes and workshops. In 2027 we hope to build upon our successful partnership with ESAV in 2025 to host a larger and more in depth series of workshops for art students interested in careers in illustration.

British Academy School in Marrakech (BASM) logo

British Academy School in Marrakech (BASM)

The British Academy School in Marrakech (BASM) is another of our key academic partners that has supported us throughout the journey from the very first festival. The BASM support not only facilitates our activities at the school, but it is their support that enables us to fund our children's activities in the Medina of Marrakech.
